Steve Belay
Staff AttorneySteve has an extensive professional practice in family law matters and believes everyone is entitled to be represented and have a voice in divorce and family law matters.
Steve received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law. Since then he practiced law at the Anderson Firm in Decorah, Iowa focused on divorce and family law matters.
In Steve’s role at the Iowa Center for Children’s Justice (ICCJ), he works with clients to ensure children have a voice in family law matters. In 30 years of practice, Steve concentrated on family law matters, custody, termination, adoption, and surrogacy matters. He has been an active mediator for 14 years. As Assistant County Attorney his areas of responsibility included juvenile court matters including Child in Need of Assistance proceedings and juvenile delinquency cases.
Steve is a regular speaker on family law issues for the Iowa State Bar Association (ISBA) and Iowa Association for Justice. He is a board member of the Iowa Lawyer’s Assistance Program. He is active in the ISBA with past service including Chair of the Family Law Section Council, ISBA Board of Governors, ISBA Foundation. He has served on the Iowa Supreme Court Children’s Justice Initiative and the Iowa Supreme Court Family Law Reform Task Force. He is also active in the American Bar Association including past Chair of the Juvenile Justice Committee of the Young Lawyers Division. Steve is a member of The Rotary Club of Des Moines and the Des Moines Choral Society.
